“I’d have to say that my best decisions have had to do with picking people.” – Bill Gates, Microsoft
Have you ever questioned some of your hiring decisions? Did you end-up with a staff member that failed to perform? When pointing the finger at someone (in an accusatory way), you soon realise that there are three fingers pointing back!! This is a sombre thought. When faced with a non-performer, ask yourself 4 questions:
- Have I selected the right person?
- Have I set clear expectations?
- Am I helping him/her to learn and develop?
- Have I created a motivating environment?
Ultimately the responsibility ends with the Employer. Perhaps it is one of the above factors that you may have got wrong. A poor selection will inevitably mean getting the remaining three wrong. People are tremendously complex. There are tools out there that will help you define the factors that will make an individual successful in a particular role. These tools cut out the ‘guess work’ in the recruitment & selection process.
